Last-minute DIY Costumes for Halloween
By Aly Walansky
Living on a tight budget is a way of life for many of us, making investing in a Halloween costume (which can run $30 and up!) hard to justify. But you don’t want to choose between this week’s groceries and this year's Halloween costume -- you can create a really awesome DIY costume with items you already have around the house!
“I'm a fan of always using clothing I have, just adding embellishments and
accessories,” says Kendra Kroll of Undercover Solutions. For instance, one year I wore a pair of short Kelly-green shorts and a white shirt on which I attached some glittery green shamrocks. I carried a volleyball...and I was an “Irish setter” (yes, Halloween bad pun costumes were tradition at my house).
Or go retro with a classic 1950s guy or girl look, suggests Rebecca Frey, a professional costume designer. “You might not have a poodle skirt lying around, but you probably have a pair of capri pants,” says Frey. (If not, a cuffed pair of jeans will work just as well!) Pair them with a collared silk blouse and a cardigan sweater. For footwear, choose slip-on penny loafers or white canvas sneakers (such as Keds) and a pair of ankle socks. (If your feet are on the small side, you can probably borrow a pair from your daughter!)
Pull your hair into a ponytail and tie it with a colorful scarf. Guys can take a cue from Grease by pairing jeans and a white pocket tee with Converse sneakers, black leather jacket, and plenty of Brylcreem to slick back their hair.
That’s not the end of the possibilities! Here are some quick last-minute costumes that may just blow your mind:
1. Have old knit gloves? Make them into impromptu deer antlers!
2. Extra toilet paper and paper towels in your closet? You have a zombie or mummy costume just waiting to be made!
