You Asked:

After I wash my face, it feels dry and tight. What’s going on?

You’re right to think something is amiss, because cleansing should leave skin feeling fresh, not like a dry, stiff sponge. What’s likely going on: Along with dirt, excess oil and makeup, your cleanser is stripping away your skin’s natural moisture.

To combat the problem, opt for a low-suds gel or no-suds cream cleanser that contains skin-nourishing ingredients like glycerin or olive oil. Steer clear of any cleanser that creates a thick lather, like bar or liquid soap. (If you’re unsure, read the label and avoid cleansers with ingredients that include the word “sulfate,” which is a lathering agent.) Suds are degreasers: They extract the natural oils and fatty acids from your skin that are essential to keeping your complexion hydrated.

Also reevaluate how you’re washing your face. When rinsing off your cleanser, splash skin only once or twice. Water begins to evaporate on contact, and too much of it can actually suck moisture out of skin or rinse away the skin’s moisturizing oils. After rinsing, pat your face dry with a soft towel.

And even if your skin doesn’t feel dry after cleansing, always apply moisturizer immediately. You always get some moisture loss post-wash, and moisturizer will help replace it.
